If there’s one fashion rule to follow, it’s this: break them. Style is freedom and you should pursue it any way you want to. You may have your own personal rules or tastes, but they are for you – not to be enforced on others.

There’s a lot of accepted wisdom out there when it comes to fashion: these are some of the most commonly held rules, as well as the reasons you should break them.

LESS IS MORE

Minimalism can be liberating, but to get there you have to pare down from many different elements: try adding more to a look in order to discover interesting combinations.

No match? No problem! Have the confidence to mismatch and clash.

YOUR SHOES AND BAG SHOULD MATCH

Unless you’re truly trying to achieve a matching outfit or one uniform color scheme, fashion is most fun when you’re integrating disparate elements rather than getting hung up on if they are color-coordinated.

DON’T CLASH

Some of your most interesting looks will be the result of juxtaposing wildly different patterns (think polka-dot skirt, horizontal striped blouse) and textures (how about… corduroy and cashmere?).

THE WOMEN’S & MEN’S SECTIONS

Wear whatever you want regardless of labels.
